JoJo – the family pet of new Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer – will join an illustrious club of cats to have access to the heart of Government following Labour’s election victory. 

From long-standing No.10 chief mouser Larry to former stray Humphrey, who moved in during Margaret Thatcher’s tenure, Downing Street has a long history of feline residents.

Cats Protection’s Behaviour Manager Nicky Trevorrow said: “Cats make brilliant pets for people with busy lives, so we have no doubt that rescue cat JoJo will be an excellent addition to No.10. Like all cats, he won’t take on anything he doesn’t want to – but if he can raise a smile on stressful days, he’ll be doing a good job.”

With the prospect of JoJo needing to face his first political hurdle – getting to know Downing Street legend Larry – the charity has issued its top tips on helping cats settle into new homes and routines:

Don’t rush: Introducing new pets to each other takes time. If you want a harmonious cat coalition, take it slowly by not forcing them to spend time together. 

Swap smells: Cats have an incredible sense of smell and would rather get to know each other through scent before they meet face to face. Do this by using a small flannel or blanket to wipe over each cat, and then place near the other cat.

Keep them busy: When their owner takes on a busy job, cats may need a bit more entertainment to keep them amused. Feeding toys are a great way to keep their minds sharp and their bodies fit and healthy.
