Our concern is that it reflects a broader, dangerous pattern of behaviour rooted in the desire for control and a growing desensitisation to the suffering of others. The intersection between those who commit violence against animals, and those who go on to perpetrate violence against people, is not coincidental. Animal abuse can often act as a gateway, making future acts of violence against animals or people easier to rationalise and commit.
It's essential that parents understand the seriousness of animal cruelty in young people. When such behaviour emerges, it must be met with open, honest conversations about empathy and respect for all living beings. And where there is a pattern of escalation, prompt referral to local authorities and support services is crucial, before harm spreads further.
Although cruelty can be deliberate, suffering can also be caused through ignorance which is why we continue to provide educational talks in schools and colleges to help cat owners of the future understand the importance of responsible pet ownership.
