Read our response to the sentencing of footballer Kurt Zouma

Comment from Dominic Sullivan, Cats Protection’s Interim Chief Executive

The horrific actions of Kurt Zouma were in our view, a deliberate and gratuitous attempt to cause harm to his cat and we are disappointed that this was not reflected in the sentence that was imposed. Whilst we are relieved to hear that his cat was not severely injured, Cats Protection were outraged by this act of cruelty.

Footballers are in the privileged position of being role models to people across the world, and anyone in an influential public position should be held to the highest standards. A clear message needed to be sent that animal cruelty will not be tolerated at any level, and unfortunately, that message was not as clearly projected as we had hoped.

However, the public outcry following the incident has demonstrated that there is no room for animal abuse in this day and age. We hope that lessons will continue to be learnt following this case and others will be deterred from abusing animals. Cats are sentient beings that experience pain and fear just like any other species.

We firmly believe that anyone who is seen or suspected of treating an animal badly, whether this is physical violence, neglect or any other form of cruelty should be reported to the RSPCA or Police and face the appropriate consequences
